2014 WNY concerts by date

Per my husband’s request, I’ve improved my concert list by adding a listing of all concerts by date so you can easily see what’s going on any given day.  I’ve also made a few small corrections to the listings.  Enjoy!

6/23 Updated the listing to include a few missing dates.

Free and cheaper 2014 WNY Concerts

I was excited to see that Big Bad Voodoo Daddy was coming to the Rochester International Jazz Festival this month and even happier to find out it was one of the free concerts.  This got me working on my annual list of free and almost free summer concerts.  It took me a while to get it all together. Some venues are no longer around (Lockport Canal Concert series) but there are new ones to replace it.  Another trend is the slowly rising cost of these events, not surprising given the improvement in the economy.  The 8 page compilation is evenly split between Buffalo-Niagara area and Rochester.  Enjoy and let me know of any events I’m missing.

Save the dates

Western New Yorkers make the most of the warmer weather to celebrate life.  There are so many events that go on there’s no way to go to every event but every year I try to make it to some new event for a change of pace.  I’m already starting to hear about upcoming events I’d like to attend and offer for your consideration.

Here’s a calendar of entertaining options to get you out and about, many are free and most are reasonably priced.  Almost all involve music and eating, two of my favorite things.  If you live in Buffalo consider hopping on the thruway to Rochester, it’s only an hour away. Likewise for you Rochesterians.

Wingfest – August 30-31 – Buffalo – this is the only event listed that I’ve never been to

Free and cheap concerts in western NY

Note: This post was updated July 2, 2012 to include the Live at Larkin concerts.

I posted last week about free (and almost free) concerts in Rochester.  This week I’ve compiled a list of more free and cheap concerts in western NY.  Many of these concerts are just over an hour drive from Rochester, so don’t let the location scare you away. I’m especially looking forward to seeing Kenny Wayne Shepherd in Lockport in mid August. And while I realize not all of these concerts are free, I still consider $10 a reasonable price to pay to see some of these artists.

For a printable version of these concerts see this post.

Recycling your electronics in WNY

I got a lot of good comments on LinkedIn about my blog post regarding Reusing your old PCs. There were a lot of suggestions on where to recycle your unwanted electronics so I thought I’d post some of those links to make it easier for people to find the information.

  • In Monroe County there are multiple locations that accept old electronics. You can find them on the Monroe County web site on the Electronics Recycling page.  Greater Rochester area ABVI-Goodwill stores will accept most electronics for recycling.
  • The Erie County website does not have a lot of information on its Computer Recycling page.  In fact, besides links to other websites, it tells you to email them to find out where to take your electronic waste.  It does have a link to the US EPA Plug-In to eCycling Partners site where you’ll find out that retailers like Best Buy & Staples will accept some electronics (tvs, cell phones and computers) for recycling.
  • Niagara County does not have a specific electronics recycling page.  To find information,  go to their Other Recycling page where you’ll find out that Electronics can be taken to the Niagara County Landfill & Recycling Center for FREE, with the exception of computer monitors, televisions, and laptops, for which there is an $8 charge.

Someone mentioned that Costco will take some electronics as well but unfortunately we don’t have those in western New York.

Have you scored a Groupon yet?

I scored my first Groupon last week and my second one today.  I had heard about this site a while back but they finally “went live” in the Rochester and Buffalo areas last week.  I’m actually registered for both locations since I work in Buffalo and live in Rochester.

Each day, Groupon features a sweet deal on the best stuff to do, see, eat, and buy in a given city. By promising businesses a minimum number of customers, they get decent deals.  My first Groupon was a $20 certificate to Lovin’ Cup in Park Point at RIT for the price of $20.  They only needed 20 people to get in on the deal to seal it.  They got over 300!  Today I got a $10 certificate to Sweet Melody’s for $5.  Sweet Melody’s is known for their gelato but I love their wraps, paninis and soup.  They’re located less than a mile from where I work in south Lockport.  Both coupons expire in January so I have plenty of time to use them.

Sign up for deals in your city now.  If they don’t have your city, still register with the site so that when they do come to where you live, you’ll be one of the first to hear about the deals.
